Plant Protected with Seed Treatment

You only get one shot at a strong stand.

Before your planter hits the field, your soybean crop is already facing risk. Cool soils, excess moisture, early-season disease pressure, and insect feeding can all reduce stand counts before plants have a chance to establish.

That early stress doesn’t just impact emergence. It can limit yield potential all season long.

Why Early-Season Protection Is Critical

The first few weeks after planting are some of the most vulnerable in a soybean crop’s life cycle. Seeds and seedlings are exposed to:

  • Seed- and soil-borne diseases
  • Early insect feeding pressure
  • Environmental stress from cold or wet conditions
  • Uneven emergence due to inconsistent soil conditions

When seedlings struggle at this stage, the crop may never fully recover. Gaps in the stand, delayed growth, and uneven development can all translate into reduced performance at harvest.

That’s why seed treatment isn’t just an add-on. It’s a management decision.

What Does a Seed Treatment Like Warden® CXII Do?

Warden® CXII contains four modes of action and is designed to provide broad-spectrum protection during those critical early growth stages. It helps:

  • Protect against key diseases like Phytophthora, Pythium, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium
  • Reduce early insect feeding damage
  • Support more uniform emergence and seed vigor
  • Promote stronger early root development

By protecting the plant from day one, seed treatment helps preserve yield potential before visible problems develop.

Add Saltro® or Victrato® for Sudden Death Syndrome Protection

If you have fields where sudden death syndrome (SDS) has shown up before, you know how frustrating it can be. The crop may look good early, only to have symptoms appear later in the season and chip away at yield.

Saltro® is a seed treatment fungicide designed to provide strong protection against SDS by protecting roots from early infection.

Victrato® is another strong defence option against SDS. It also adds an additional layer of protection against soybean cyst nematodes (SCN) making it a fit for fields where both pressures are a concern.

When paired with Warden® CX, these options provide:

  • Broad-spectrum early-season disease and insect protection
  • Targeted SDS defense
  • Added nematode protection (with Victrato®)
  • A more complete protection package for higher-risk fields

If you have fields with a history of SDS, tight soybean rotations, heavier soils, a variety that’s weak on SDS, or known nematode pressure, this is a conversation worth having before planting.

Optimize®: Supporting Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation

Protection is step one. Performance is step two.

Optimize® works alongside Warden® CX to support stronger nodulation and nitrogen fixation in soybeans. It combines two elite strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum to encourage earlier nodule formation and stronger root development.

What that means in the field:

  • Earlier, stronger root growth
  • Improved nodule formation
  • Enhanced nitrogen fixation potential
  • Better crop performance across varying soil conditions

When to consider treating with Optimize: high yielding environments, fields with longer rotations where soybeans haven’t been planted for 3+ years, areas that have been saturated or water-logged, low pH or lighter soils

Matching Seed Treatment to Field Conditions

Not every field faces the same level of risk. Early planting, heavy residue, tight rotations, and a history of disease pressure can all increase the value of seed treatment protection.

That’s why it’s important to evaluate:

  • Planting date
  • Field history
  • Soil conditions
  • Insect and disease pressure in your area

The right seed treatment plan should align with your overall crop management strategy.

Make the Decision Before You Plant

Seed treatment isn’t something to think about after the planter rolls. It’s part of your upfront planning. If you’re finalizing seed decisions, now is the time to talk treatment. The right plan from the start can make a measurable difference at harvest. Reach out to your Central United Coop agronomy team and let’s make sure your soybeans start strong.
