Build a Clean Field with a Strong Pre-Emerge Herbicide

A successful weed control program doesn’t start with spraying. It starts with planning.

Pre-emergence herbicides play a critical role in helping crops establish themselves without early weed competition. When used as part of a layered strategy, they create a cleaner environment during the most critical stages of growth.

Why Pre-Emerge Programs Matter

Many annual weeds germinate around the same time as corn and soybeans. If they emerge together, weeds immediately compete for sunlight, nutrients, and moisture.

An effective pre-emerge herbicide program helps:

  • Provide early season seed weed control
  • Reduce competition during stand establishment and early season growth
  • Take pressure off post-emerge chemicals

As we know, mother nature doesn’t always provide us the right environment to spray in: too wet, too windy, too rainy, too cloudy. By getting down a pre-emerge herbicide we are widening the post application window and limiting early season weed emergence.

The goal is simple: give your crop the opportunity to establish in a low-competition environment.

The Value of Overlapping Residuals

No post-emerge application can fully make up for a weedy start. Although we may be able to kill the weeds, the impact that it had on the crops can not be undone. The easiest way to control weeds is to keep them from emerging in the first place.

Starting with a strong pre-emerge foundation and including residual herbicides into your post pass helps reduce the need for rescue applications, improve season-long weed control, and ultimately protect yield through harvest.

Building a Field-Specific Plan

No two fields are exactly alike. Soil type, cropping history, weed spectrum, resistance concerns, and planting dates all influence herbicide decisions.

Pre-emergence herbicides are about being proactive when it comes to weed control, not reactive. An effective pre-emerge strategy should consider dominant weed species, resistance challenges, soil texture and organic matter, crop rotation, as well as the weather outlook and planting window.

Planning ahead allows for better product selection, proper rates, and thoughtful layering of residuals.

If you’re finalizing your crop protection plan, now is the time to review your pre-emerge strategy and ensure it aligns with your field goals.
